The UK Gym X Training Challenge Review of 2010
Thank you to all the UK Gym Athletes who supported World Gym Challenge.com and the need to see a sport for gyms grow. 2011 now beckons and one year before the Olympics hits London it would nice to see a industry shift gear and focus more on fitness and results, rather than weight loss, as I'm pretty sure there is not an Olympic event or Athlete who gets results from weight loss. Their motivation is improved performance and that is what the fitness industry needs.

Konkura January Gym Challenge update ...

Danny Watson at 2009 Fitness XtremeDanny Watson has nailed a 5:17 on the Konkura January Gym Challenge. Danny is also a UK 'Elite' Graded Gym Athlete who is now heavily into Cross Fit.

Thrusters play a lot into the Cross Fitters training diary, using the bar bell and good technique, the dumbbell was a useful variation so that transitions between stations were easy to manage.

This is an incredible time by Danny and has he set the fastest time yet?

This challenge ends on the last day of January 2011.

5.35 !!! Konkura  January Gym Challenge and Gut Churner News

Jason King . David Lloyd BasildonJason King from David Lloyd Basildon has set the pace on the

Konkura January Gym Challenge! 5:35 ... five seconds off the 'Is it possible?' target figure!

Jason has said as a word of advice is to pace yourself on the first row, anything below a 1:35 pace and your legs will be like jelly on the thrusters.

Outstanding result. And for those of you who know Jason, you will know for sure that this event was carried out with near perfect technique.

Jason is one of only 20 'Elite' Graded WGC Gym Athletes in the country, winning many of the events he has entered, or been in the first five finishers.

Gut Churner

Exposing the Gym Athlete has been WGC's main prioroty and the introduction of many new online challenges has seen entries from Iceland and the UK so far. Unhappy with his first attempt on the 'Gut Churner' Jason put 45 minites in his sites and took the challenge on again.

His final time 44:54 simply incredible ! He remarked on completion "Hurt like hell, I do not want to do that one again!" Well done Jason.

If you want to try this challenge, send in your results to info@worldgymchallenge.com and we will publish the splits on our Leader Boards and remember you can try four, five or six rounds of this very tough challenge.

Welcome back Iceland !
Kiddy ( Kristjana Gunnarsdottir Centre picture ) from Iceland has added a 51:30 Gut Churning experience to the Female Leader Board. Last time was saw Kiddy was at Best of the Best, where she came to second to legendry Michelle Parsons in Dubai. Outstanding performance from Kiddy in this new challenge and one that has definitely laid down the gauntlet to any UK female Gym Athlete ..I mean this was six rounds of the Gut Churner and as we all know , it really takes that special person to just keep on going past four rounds, five rounds and enter the 6th round.

How many Rounds Can you go in 45 minutes?
Treadmill 1000 m @ 5%
30 Press Ups
500 m Row
20 A Stride Jumps

Jason King has managed 6 rounds in 46 mins! Completed yesterday at his gym in Essex. Jason remarked that he has not been training on a concept rower for a while and that to reach seven would take a phenomenal runner! Still it was a brilliant result for the recent joint winner at Calso.

Is it all possible to reach 7?

Well done Jase, I managed 4 and it worked well as a gym session for me.

The biggest problem ever created in X Training was the need to travel to events. Well now you don't have to. Events can be set up in your own gym and money raised for charity which is great for the sport. Alternatively you can enter the UK Gym Challenge Fitness Series and receive Fitness Points for your gym, which could possibly lead to your gym being crowned the Fittest Gym In the World.

If events can take place in the US and in the UK over the same weekend then events can happen anywhere. Plans are being introduced by WGC to make events more universally acceptable and the next event in the World Gym Challenge.com Series will have a full line up of exercises that are completed in a gym that everybody can do.

The UK's Fittest Gym and the UK's Gym Athlete Of The Year 2010
These awards are presented to the Gym Athletes in achievements gained within a gym environment. They reflect all the training and equipment used in a gym and they have the results to say that this year, we competed and took on the best that other gyms had to offer and we, Fitness First Gorton came out victorious. We are the UK's Fittest Gym and Richard Vint is the UK's Gym Athlete of the Year.

11th November
X Training - A Sport For Gyms

Richard Vint - UK's Ultimate Gym Athlete 2010In 2005 a brochure was created by WGC to set out a plan for a Sport For Gyms. At that time the goal was inclusion into the 2020 Olympics as a recognised sport. WGC remains committed on the process of a recognised sport for gyms called X Training. X being the right mixture of cardio and strength exercises to produce The Ultimate Gym Athlete.

To enhance this process World Gym Challenge focuses on the UK to produce the champions of gyms. In 2010 the winner's were:

  • Richard Vint - The Ultimate Gym Athlete
  • Fitness First Gorton - UK's Fittest Gym

On both occasions winners were produced by members of gyms achieving results based on their fitness levels alone, which were gained in a Sport for Gym's - X Training events.

World Gym Challenge remains committed to this process and is currently in talks with a gym in the US to embrace the principles of The Gym X Training Championships (GymXTC™) and broaden its scope to events in the US too.

The first event of the 2011 Series will be the ICE BREAKER at the Marsh Academy New Romney Kent, on the 6th Feb which is set in beautiful countryside of one the most picturesque towns in the UK.

The event will be posted soon and World Gym Challenge.com welcomes gyms to register for free at info@worldgymchallenge.com which will enable any gym worldwide to either run these gym challenges at their own gym, and give members personal folders to record their results in - or gain fitness points at at The UK Gym Fitness Challenge Series 2011.

For a Sport to exist in gyms two ingredients are needed:

  • The method to record results
  • A gym, with members who want to achieve results in 'gym - fitness'

The method to record results is possible at World Gym Challenge.com - the question is have you got the members who are fit enough to compete? Some gyms have ... and some gym's haven't !

The Beast (New Challenge) ...

The Beast is known to you as a Reebok Step. To WGC it is known as The Beast. It is so versatile in what you can do when it comes to challenges. The latest takes you to a new dimension in physical barriers - just how far can you push yourself on a piece of apparatus (The Beast) and bit of floor space?

Set the Beast to four risers plus bench or full extension. No rest, complete all exercises in a safe manner and time yourself with a stopwatch. This is a high intensity exercise. Do not attempt this if you feel are not physically fit or have medical problems. Consult a trained fitness professional if in any doubt.

Tease The Beast and laugh at it with ....

(1) 200 Alternate Squat thrusts .... then do battle

(2) 50 Ski Jumps (Jump side to side of the Beast landing on top top to count as 1 rep) you can double tap.

(3) 50 Press Ups (Men feet on the Beast) Women 3/4 prone

(4) 50 A Stride Jumps (Legs either side of The Beast and jump on top to count as 1 rep) you can double tap

(5) 50 Triceps Dips (Palms on The Beast legs outstretched and perform triceps dips - Bum must touch the floor)

(6) 50 Body Squats ( Give The Beast a rest) 90 Degree body squats (legs parallel to the floor)

(7) 200 Alternate Squat Thrusts (Believe me The Beast is laughing at you !)

Date the first Beast Challenge started was 1st November ... Just add your times to info@worldgymchallenge.com by a registered Personal Trainer on WGC and we will add it the Results Table, as long as you provide a valid email address and date of birth, or are already a member of WorldGymChallenge.com

Can you beat The Beast ?

Fitness First Gorton wins UK's Fittest Gym (2nd Year running)

Mike Jones and Craig Horsfield at this year's Ultimate Gym Athlete.

Well done to Mike Jones (Team Captain) from Fitness First Gorton, who once again steered his team to victory in The UK Gym XTC ™ (Gym X Training Championships) 2010.

As well as competing, Mike has been influential throughout the whole season with his judging and organising of many XT events.

Craig Horsfield persistence in events this year and a great team effort into entering events had them hold on to a narrow lead from runners up Calso gym in Kent.

The event will run again next year and if you would like to take part please contact info@worldgymchallenge.com to see if your gym can be hailed as UK's Fittest Gym.

15th October
The UK 'Gym - Fitness' Challenge Series
Richard Vint wins Gym Athlete of the Year 2010

Richard VintThe Series has closed for the year. The last event was Fit Brit. The Series will return next year with the added event 'The Canterbury Tales Gym Challenge' and possibly one other. A calendar of times has already been published, but confirmation wil be announced shortly.

This year, there is only one name that has dominated the sport of X Training and that is Richard Vint form Fitness First Fleet. Winning The Ultimate Gym Athlete and Fit Brit and now Gym Athlete of the Year is surely the best performance of any gym athlete in one year and makes Rich a worthy champion.

Next Year the Series will return, with the first event earmarked for the 6th Feb.

A new event is currently being tested on the 14th Nov at Body Mind & Leisure in Canterbury Kent. The event is not of the normal race format and the reps are slightly less to keep the racing very tight, they will also encourage others who haven't the strength endurance to try their luck.

Also, another venue is being looked into for next year and possibly a unique race format with a XT event on a race track. It's all very tasty , tasty for the sport of X Training and I wish every Gym Athlete every success in the events they enter.

Equal Fitness Racing   (Race Plan Ultimate Gym  Athlete)
Based on a pre determined result Equal Fitness Racing (EFR) is the basis on which World Gym Challenge separates itself from any other gym challenge. The entire concept is built around the Ultimate Gym Athlete Leader Board - whereby you race only those that enter gym challenges and have a similar result to you. Any gym, anywhere in the world can take part - for free ! But eventually it boils down to this .... only the most motivated Gym Athletes compete in the sport of X Training and get results in 'gym fitness'.

The '100' Heartbreaker

Ultra FIT magazine have issued a WOW Challenge (Workout of the Week) involving the classic Burpee Press Up. It asks that you do 10 minutes of burpee press ups (record set is 104) so, WGC has a slightly different approach to this and created The '100' Heartbreaker. Same exercise but you time yourself and stop after 100. This will be great prep for the Marlow 'Tough Enough' Challenge. Oh and btw , remember the jump at the end !

Results will be posted on a leader board.

The UKGCA obviously focuses on events that are in the UK Gym Fitness Challenge Series and wishes all Gym Athletes every success in any event they enter.

Can the fantastic time of 13: 36 set by Neil Cameron in 2008 be broken this year ?

Who is the Fittest Gym of the Year (UK) so far ...

Keep posted folks, all those points mean something for the gyms taking part.

The Fittest Gym in the UK can only be tested by the fitness of their members and as WGC is the only one running this challenge and as members from any gym take take part - only the gyms in the UK Fitness Gym Challenge Series can count themselves and members as the fittest in the UK.

It's really not about just one event - its about a series of events over one year, by different gyms and different gym members... and the winner is so far .... keep posted - details will be up shortly.

Gym Athlete of the Year 2010 Results (June)

Gym Athlete of the Year is a game of Kings , Queens and Pawns in the gym. Only if you enter one event per year , you add towards your gym's tally of points, which at the end of the year could make all the difference between being crowned Fittest Gym in the UK based on fitness results achieved by their members only.

It's a bit like the lottery - you have to enter events to stand the chance to be crowned UK's Fittest Gym and the UK Gym Challenge Association is proud to be first to initiate this dynamic competition, just to see how gym - fit members actually are.

FYI , we have contacted

The FIA

Life Fitness

Fit Pro

Reps

Matrix Equipment

Mars Refuel

Vodafone

Marks & Spencer

Powerade

Technogym

Precor

Star Trac

Premier Training

Ultra FIT Magazine

And what seems like a thousand gyms - but really to no affect - Just today I watched gym staff in the gym I train at gather round and talk socially amongst one another and not really care too much about what their members are achieving in a gym - I tried to engage them in the Powerade Great Gym Challenge, but they kind of nodded , murmured a few words , then went back to their conversations. It's a hard world out there for the Gym Athlete.

But those names mentioned above in blue , are the first ever gym members who are getting recognised for the fitness levels they have achieved in a gym environment and to them all I say thank you for supporting the sport of X Training.

It must be remembered Gym Athlete of the Year is based on a series of events over one year.

Richard Vint - Fitness First Fleet

Richard Vint - Read about what Richard thought about the Gorton Grueller and discover some of the secrets that make this year's winner one of the best discoveries for X Training the sport has ever seen.

Taking this season by storm, Richard has been at the top of the tree for every event so far this season in the first ever UK Gym Fitness Challenge Series.

Since his introduction to to X Training by Cassius Frankson, and his taster at Fit Brit in 2008, Richard steers and perceivers in creating his own special training techniques to ensure that he constantly improves. As a serving Police officer and a member of a very busy gym in Fleet, Hampshire, Richard has to make sure that when he trains, he is as efficient as possible , in as least time as possible, that will give him maximum results.

The days of endlessly running around in a gym with no direction are very nearly at an end. The Industry will soon recognise the brilliant performances of what Gym Athletes achieve and have to support their members in what is the only sport for gyms - X Training.

A great day, with some new exercises included, which have been designed to really push you to absolute limits, whether you are Elite Gym Athlete, or just starting out in Gym Fitness you are guaranteed a great result.

The Gorton Grueller Race Report

Richard Vint - Fitness First PooleKelly Friel - Esporta HampshireClick here for Details

This year's race report celebrates the making of two fitness champion's, Richard Vint Fitness First Poole and Kelly Friel Esporta Hampshire, in a gym in the only way we know how, by members and personal trainers creating an event and people turning up and challenging one another to a physical fitness challenge in a gym environment.

Numbers were disappointingly low - however for the races that took part and for those members who achieved results in fitness, you take with you the knowledge that in a infrastructure of over 4 million members of which any single member of a gym could try this challenge - the numbers that turned up in Gorton did themselves proud - and you are simply the best.

Mike Jones, Varouk Vawda and Craig Horsfield all from Fitness First Gorton are an inspiration to any gym and the fitness industry, that ever wanted their members to achieve results in fitness. The fittest and most motivated gym members X Train. And the Gorton Grueller is one of the best events - roll on next year!

Ben Stroud's record still exists(17:07) another year will go by and then another Gorton Grueller will take place and maybe the record and pb's could be broken - the point is, that's a lot of motivation and focus waiting to be trained for.

Race Line Up

Every gym in the UK has their so called Elite in Fitness. Lets face facts. Until you have proven results in fitness in Gym Based Sports keep on thinking you are Elite - because the harsh reality is when it comes to Gym Based Sports , the only way you get results is to enter events.

There is simply no excuse not to compete if you want to call yourself 'Elite in Fitness' each gym can have access to the WGC database and if you want to compete in your own gym - you can. But if you want to compete against the best in the UK then you have to enter events.

The Gorton Grueller Races

Personal Trainer Mike Jones (Organiser of the Gorton Grueller)

WGC is looking forward to the final race of the day, where current No 1 Richard Vint takes on Daniel Wright. Not much is known of Daniel, but word of the grapevine is that this will be a corking race!

Trudi (LA Fitness Deby) and Kelly (Esporta Hampshire) go head to head - it's gonna be close !!

Alex Woods(Edinburgh) and Steve Dowse (Definition Lifestyle and Fitness) close ranks on what are becoming epic duels.

The UK Gym Challenge Association

The UK Gym Challenge Association is interested in one thing - members who have proven results in Gym Based Sports.

It's a bit like the Football Association being interested in football results!

If your gym is not interested in Fitness Gym Challenges ask yourself why?

If you or your gym would like to join the UKGCA then contact info@worldgymchallenge.com for further details.

Calling All Gym Athletes !

The Great Gym Challenge

After contacting Powerade last year about support for WGC it is nice to see they have embraced a Gym Challenge of their own. Admittedly it would have been preferable for support for the UK Gym Athlete - but it is a start to get more members taking part in Gym Challenges.

A fun Gym Challenge has been created by 'Take to the Streets' and supported by Powerade.

The challenge consists of :

2 km Row

5 km Bike

3 km Run

It is tough as you make it. If you are a Gym Athlete then the following League Table has been created for you, with me winning it so far with a time of 34:59

League ID is 22874

Gym Athlete League

Password: Gym Athlete

As a bit of fun, this is a worthwhile challenge. I used Pulse Bikes and cycled at around 26kph - 29 kph all the way. I ran at roughly 11 - 13 kph all the way and has a split of around 2:01 for the row.

Lets not too concerned about what Bike does what - its a fun challenge for you to take part in and please join this fun challenge.

Any member who takes part will have his/her times displayed on a WGC Leader Board too, if they wish.

Gary Nicholls, Steve Dowse and Craig Horsfield

The Brighton X Training Challenge

Thank you to Jamie Spencer for organising the 2nd event in the UK Gym Challenge Series (The Brighton Nut Cracker) A lot of time and effort goes into the preparations for events such as these and the 2nd Brighton X Training Challenge looks to be a quality field of ranging 'gym-fitness' levels, so be prepared to see some fantastic racing.

Final races in both Open Categories  ( Alex Woods , Richard Vint, Becky Nicholas, Kelly Friel, Steve Dowse and Craig Horsfield) will be worth the journey alone and Gym Athletes from the past (Claire Boyce) and returning Gym Athletes of many years, Gary Nicholls, Martin Carter, Steve Dowse, Dave Halll, Simon Bellinger all add to the experience of competing in Gym Fitness Challenges. It's also nice to see the return of William McKeever (first timer at Camberley) who has been enjoying his experience of X Training.

The event may be down in numbers from last year slightly, but is topped up nicely by gyms that are passionate about gym fitness, such as Daves Gym in Sidcup Kent, where brothers Anton, Miles and Joseph Micalef all train at, along with Nigel Hodges, Gary Dorman and Philip Brown, all spurred on by personal trainer Dave Hall.

The harder you train in a gym, the harder it is to shine. Gym Athletes are emerging in the fitness industry in the UK as people who achieve results in a gym environment. They are the A grade students of  'gym-fitness' and have the results to prove it.

WGC remains committed in showcasing events and pushing the UK Gym Athletes into the forefront of the fitness industry to show just what can be achieved in a gym environment and welcomes any gym into the UK Gym Challenge Series, so that members can show just what motivated, focused gym members can achieve.

Good luck to everybody who competes on Saturday - You are the best in the country and WGC salutes you.

The Brighton X Training Challenge 2nd Draft Race Plan (Final Version)

If you are wondering why the picture below is a little out of focus, it's because it was taken on a mobile phone. You see X- Training is not a corporate money making spin - it's about gym fitness and the people who do it - glossy, smiley , happy faces may work to sell fitness , but it won't get you results. WGC deals in results only!

WGC estimates that 95% of any gym is not 'gym-fit' * and alarm bells should be ringing by now.

Mike Jones keeps the fire burning for Haiti.

Mike Jones, personal trainer at Gorton Fitness First has a passion for fitness and as such is always looking out to push challenges forward at Gorton. On Sunday, just after Comic Relief and during a Manchester United match the gym was quiet - very quiet apart from the noise of the occasional roar of a lion, the beating chest of a gorilla and the grace of watching a tiger on a treadmill, The Haiti Gym Challenge reached Gorton FF and the Unique Gym Challenge Day (28th Jan) had a few more additions to the leader board.

Will X Training get the kick start it needs this year?

Next issue of Ultra FIT magazine see's how the Royal Marines train and who is their fittest? Last year WGC covered the Royal Marine X Training Challenge and witnessed first hand just what happens when a group of very motivated and very fit individuals compete to be the fittest and awarded the Marines with its own trophy in celebration of who would win.

All the splits and results were entered into the WGC leader Boards (Results) and as those that know about X Training know all too well, the winner was Chris Lord with a time of 15 min's and 55 seconds, almost a minute quicker then his nearest rival and who features on the back pages of this months Ultra FIT magazine.

The forces are a prime breeding ground for X Training and with Men's Fitness launching a new challenge with FIT Brit, it certainly looks like X Training is going to be on everybody lips by those who are serious about fitness by the end of the year.

Gym Athletes compete in the sport of X Training and the Royal Marines have been competing for years.

Good quality judging makes an event and Lloyd Millichap - Head Judge and organiser has some of the most experienced judges in X Training at this event. Be warned the judging will be tight and consistent.

On behalf of WGC and Lloyd Millichap - we hope you enjoy it and good luck to all the Gym Eagles who takes part.

Great exposure for Gym Challenge for Haiti on Women's Fitness website

Getting more women involved in X Training and raising money for a great cause.

Ice Ice Baby .... Ice Ice Baby ... Ice Ice Baby ... The Camberley Ice Breaker

Becky Nicholas - Calso Gym, KentTrudi Hawksworth - LA Fitness DerbyIs the X Training scene due for some changes in who wins challenges this year? Can anybody reach close to Royal Marine Chris Lord's impressive performance of last year - can he be caught?

Well until the sport expands and brings new blood into it, or returning Gym Athletes come back into the sport- we will not know for sure.

What can be said, is that this event is a great start to the season, full of top seeded Gym Athletes raring to get their teeth into a fresh new challenge with inspiring changes to the normal format of events.

The final races between Steve Mead and Richard Vint, between Andy Lett and Steve Dowse, between Dan Edge and Martin Carter are going to be awesome. But for me and no pressure ladies, the race of the day has got to be Becky Nicholas (Calso Gym ) and Trudi Hawksworth (LA Fitness Derby) For those in the know - know that surely this will be one of those races that will go right to the wire - the cardio specialist vs the weight specialist ... I can hardly wait.

2nd Feb

First Draft of the Race Line Up for the Camberley Ice Breaker can be seen here Plus some photos from last year.

The next event in the first ever UK Gym Fitness Challenge Series is The Brighton Nut Cracker and details will be released soon.

The Run Bike Row

A new imperial version of the Run Bike Row is available to gyms in the US called.

The USA Run Bike Row (Charity Day) Challenge.

The distances are set as follows:

Run 0.62 Miles

Bike 1.25 Miles

Row 500 m

The Row is still metric due to most rowing machine events accepting the Olympic distance of 2000 m as the main competition distance.

The first ever US based gym in New York is currently using this challenge using Cybex gym equipment. This is a first in the history of X Training having direct contact with the USA and World Gym Challenge.com acknowledges Core Dynamics Gym in the US (New York) as the first gym to engage in X Training (Gym Fitness Challenges).

We hope they have a successful and very enjoyable experience in this fantastic new gym sport.
