On X-Training...
How long have you been X-Training?
4 Years
Why do you find X-Training so exciting?
It's the challenge to remain fit and always seek new methods to maintain your fitness.
Do you teach X-Training to your clients?
I am not a personal trainer, but if I were, I would.
What are their views on X-Training?
I am sure they would enjoy it.
Who has been your biggest influence in X-Training?
Andy Lett - who is one of the best Gym Athletes in the UK right now for his dedication to the sport. Steve Dowse for supporting the sport and knowing how to get the best out of you. Gary Nicholls for sheer brilliance in the Vet category and remaining in the Leader pack throughout events. The biggest disappointment is to see those that claim to be 'Gym Athletes' yet do nothing for the sport.
How often do you train?
3 to four times a week for no more then 45 mins. I use a stopwatch!
What is your favourite exercise?
The treadmill. I love setting myself mini challenges. I normally run for 30 minutes with suitable rest periods and interval sessions including inclines and splits. I am never bored on the treadmill.
What is your favourite food for training?
Pasta. Bagels. Porridge. Fruit, nuts and chocolate.
What is your ambition in X-Training?
To see the sport and the Gym Athletes get the recognition they deserve by both the gyms they train and the Fitness Industry Association.
What exercise secret would you give a newcomer to X-Training?
Never try any X Training event only once and think it's too hard. The first event is the worst. You gain so much more in the years that follow.

What is your favourite film?
One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest
What is your favourite action/drama film?
Taken/True Lies/ Aliens/

Ricky Gervais, for his humour. Churchill for his wit and Marilyn Monroe for her beauty
Who is your comedy hero?
Ricky Gervais/Tommy Cooper/Freddy Starr
What is your favourite book or magazine?
Ultra - FIT magazine is bar the far the best sport magazine.
On Sport...
Did you excel at sport at school and if yes, what sport?
No, I gave up football at 13.
Do you compete in any other sport?
I boxed in the Army (Battalion level) was never really that good - but it gave me confidence and my desire to remain fit.
Have you competed in any other sport in the past?
Nothing that I really enjoyed.
How often do you rest?
Two to three days a week.
Do you suffer many injuries?
I have done in the past (my calf) It seems to be getting better now that I have stopped running outside.
Have you ever parachuted (sky dived tandem or solo) out of a plane. Would you?
No and No. But I have my Pilot 1 Hang Gliding License from my days in the Army.
What is the one sport you have never taken part in but would have loved to have excelled in?
Golf! Loads of money - the best hotels, travel and probably the only sport where you don't endure physical pain to succeed and be successful
If you could meet anyone in sport, past or present, who would it be?
Mohammad Ali. Mike Tyson and Randy Couture.
Did you ever see the footie match in the film Kes?
Yes. A learning curve in how sports at schools has developed. Brian Glover was brilliant.

Now 72

What is your favourite sports film?

On TV...
What is your fave TV show?
24 - The Wire - The West Wing (first two Series) - really enjoyed Bellamys People on BBC 2
Do you watch soaps?
Not really
Are you a 'biggest baddest TV with the flattest screen Dolby surround sound is the best' kinda person?
Yes. I would have a cinema in my home if I could.
What sport shows do you watch?
UFC when it was on Bravo - and Ultimate Fighter. Don't get to see as much now and there seems to be a major influx of fighters which is good, but I kinda really enjoyed watching it grow.
On Health...
Do you think the obesity problem in schools and the US can be controlled?
No. Not ever. There is too much advertising and sustained high profile marketing to ensure that there will always be an obesity problem. There is however a choice made by individuals into what they want in life and if its to big and happy - so be it. If it's to follow a path of eating regular healthy meals and exercising three to four times a week as part of a lifestyle change , then I am sure you will benefit from it from quality of life that will follow.
What's the one golden rule in weight management?
Enjoy your food. If you are a top level athlete - eat for the sport you do. If you are on a budget - try to stay off processed foods, avoid saturated fats and add fruit more often. If you can balance exercise and a healthy diet you have found the golden rule to weight management.
Do you know your BMI & BMR?
According to my BMI I am obese(as are most rugby players) I think BMI figures are outdated. I am by no means my ideal weight, but I am not obese! I worked out by BMY ages ago ... but have forgotten it !
Do you know your resting and maximum heart rate?
around 55 and my max around 82/3
Do you train with an HR monitor?
Yes as often as I can. The best training partner you can have. It's the one piece of kit you should always wear in the gym. It tells you calories burned and also just how hard you are really working, although I swear my readings on the concept 2 rower must be wrong !

My son Luke and Richard Vint at Brighton 2010
I started the 'World Gym Challenge' as a measure of fitness for anybody who goes to the gym. I am amazed that to this day that if I ask somebody how 'gym- fit' they are - they simply do not know. There is no real measure and this is in a industry that has 110 million members.
Gym Based Sports channels your training to the environment you train in 'The Gym' and by progressively improving on results for gym challenges there becomes a measure of fitness that is comparable amongst your friends, colleagues and other sports.
The journey to seek recognition for the fittest members of gyms has never been easy. There have been many occasions when I have wanted to throw in the towel and give it all up. My personal life has suffered and stress has been unbearable at times - but when you believe in something and are passionate about seeing 'gym - fitness' become a sport, then there is no easy path. The challenge is to take Gym Based Sports into a world class sporting event, which started at World Gym Challenge.com Ltd. I am extremely proud of all of my members achievements and what t the web site stands for.
