The Growth of the Gym Eagle

To be the best in the environment you train in ...

Speed , Strength and Endurance .

What is a Gym Eagle?

A Gym Eagle is somebody who challenges somebody else from another gym to a fitness challenge. He or she is not satisfied with being  challenged in their own gym - they need to be tested against others of equal fitness and to see if they can push themselves in a gym challenge that tests their fitness levels.

What is the difference between a Gym Eagle and a Gym Athlete

A Gym Athlete uses all of the equipment in the gym to train for events that need constant and varying training methods to be in the best physical condition they possibly can be in.

A Gym Eagle is still a Gym Athlete, but will challenge another member from another gym to a fitness challenge.

Are they only the Super Fit ?

They, in most cases are not the super fit, but the super motivated and here lies the difference. Having completed a challenge in the best possible time, you can reflect accurately and realise just what incredible achievements have been achieved by you and other gym members.

What is the UK Gym Challenge Series

A number of fitness challenges comprising only of fitness challenges devised for a gym environment and for members of gyms.

Do I have to travel to events and enter?

No, any event can be created at your own gym or Sports Hall and results published on line specific to your own gym. However if you wish your Gym to be considered UK's Fittest Gym, you will have to enter a national event.

What is the Camberley Ice Breaker Gym Challenge?

The Camberley Ice Breaker is now in it's second year. It is the first event in the UK Gym Fitness Challenge Series, where fitness points can be achieved by any gym that takes part.

A few modifications from last year to the course to suit the growing need for new and exciting gym challenges in 2010 has meant that this year, two new disciplines have been introduced  to events.

Medicine Ball Sit Ups

Shuttle Runs

The judging for each discipline will be strict and fair. Please ensure the reps are correct and to the required standard. Each performance will be well judged and fair throughout.

This course is particularly suited for Sports Halls

Health and Safety

Rules for The Camberley Ice Breaker have been well thought out in accordance with Health and Safety - however with all  sporting events it is ultimately the responsibility of the individual to ensure that they have trained correctly and are prepared for this very tough physical challenge.

Training

The nature of any gym challenge is to give motivation in advance of any event and to that degree, training should be well underway in anticipation of The Camberley Ice Breaker - Please do enter this event  at a level that is unsuitable to you  - train accordingly, smart and safe and should you be in any doubt - do not enter.

The Gym Challenge

Having said that, Gym Challenges are not out of reach to anybody who goes to a gym. The training facility is there to use according to any event you enter . Your personal trainers are there to help you also prepare and possibly enter too, so you can combine your training together as a small group.

Are you the Fittest Club in the UK ?

Whatever you decide, it is without question that the best gyms in the UK are not the gyms that have the best coffee, or leather seated sofas, but gyms that are achieving actual results in fitness and the UK Gym Challenge Association gives access for free for any gym in the UK to take part in the Challenges - It's really up to you and your gym as individuals to see if you can take up the challenge and be considered the Fittest Club In the UK .

As with all WGC events , it is hoped all organisers raise finance for a suitable charity. Last year the Camberley Ice Breaker supported the British Heart Foundation.

This year it is very proud to support.

Rules for the Camberley Ice Breaker

Row – Damper setting 6 will be used for males and females. The straps may be loose or not used at all but feet must not touch the floor until the full distance is completed. A 20 second penalty will be given if this happens.

Bench press – body pump bars will be used for all. Bar must touch the chest on the downward phase and the arms must be straight at the top of the movement. Note: if you go too fast with your reps and are too wide with your grip the reps can look ragged and you may have reps discounted.

Cycle – mount the bike and pedal initially for the lights to come on and engage the computer, then type your level straight into the bike level 8,12 female, male intermediates. 12,15 female, male advanced. Feet must not touch the floor until the full distance is clocked. A 20 second penalty will be given if this happens.

Med ball sit ups – 3kgs females 4kgs males. Feet will be placed together under a flat reebok step. Knees must be together. Ball is held between the hands and must touch the floor behind the head on the downward phase and must touch the top of the step on the upward phase. The arms must pass around the legs and not through the legs. You and the judge will know if u have not made contact with the floor or the step and the rep will not count.

Weights stipulated on all courses are not including the bar! Body pump bars are approx 2kgs so adjust your training accordingly.

Step ups5kgs females 12kgs male. The step ups will be carried out on a step 5 risers high. Only 1 step will be used for both competitors doing step ups at either end. It’s up close and personal and increases the tension in the race. It has been tried and tested and there is no risk of clashing. The green line at either end of the step on top must be crossed by both heels for a valid rep. Although a perfectly straight body on top of the step will not be expected your hips must go far enough forward to satisfy the judge. The weights must be placed and crossed on top of the step on completion of the required reps. If they are dropped and fall off the step you will be called back to sort them out.

Shoulder press12.5kgs female 25kgs male. The bar will be on the floor in front of a steeply inclined reebok step. Competitors are responsible for picking up and placing their own bar back on the floor. The arms must be straight on the upward phase and below the chin on the downward phase. Level with the chin or chin lifting will not be accepted! In training if you go down level to the ‘adams apple’ you will have no problems with this. We are going to be super strict on this one folks! Also on completion of your reps you must not drop the bar from a height, it must be placed. Its an expensive floor and you may be billed for any damage caused.

Shuttle runs 20 x 20m = 400mOn completion of the shoulder press you will find yourselves at one end of the 20m line. You will then complete 20 x 20m shuttles. On the turn one foot must clear the line. There will be no warnings and the judge will inform you at the end of your race of any 10 second penalties you may have incurred. All you have to do is clear that line with one foot and not cheat and you and the judges will be happy. You will be in a high state of fatigue at this point so maximum concentration will be vital! For interest to spectators and to see where you are and where your competitor is with regards to amount of shuttles complete there will be a line judge holding up an A4 card numbered 1-10. 1 will count for there and back (2 shuttles)

Weight carry12kg dbs female 22kgs dbs male

The big finish! Have you gone too hard on the shuttles? 4 x 20 metres intermediate (80m) 8 x 20 metres (160m) advanced. As with the shuttle runs on the turn one foot must clear the line. Again 10 second penalties will be issued each time this happens. The weights may be placed down at either end of the 20m lines but a 20 second penalty will be given if the weights are placed down anywhere down your 20m stretch. As with the shoulder press dropping the weights will not only incur penalties but you may be billed for any damage to the expensive flooring. Please and I’m sure you all will respect such a great facility.

Good luck with your training guys and girls and a Happy New year! Look forward to seeing you all in Feb!
