Trudi, Let get this right, Sam is related to you because she is your niece.
Yes, that’s right.
Was it you Trudi that introduced Sam to X Training?
Yeah, I guess so. Sam started coming to circuit training with me when she was 14. It was Kirk Gibbons Circuit Training, which in itself is a great introduction to X Training. And obviously also by coming to watch me. She got interested by a local X Training event that Kirk arranged at our club and got a bit of a bug for it.
Sam, tell me about this bug. What is it you really like about X Training?
Well not whilst I am doing it! But after it feels great – the feeling you get having completed a challenge is really something.
A great sense of achievement?
Yeah, especially today. It was better for me because I actually won.
How did that make you feel knowing you had the fastest time of the day in the Intermediate?
It felt good. It made me want to do it again.
What’s next Sam?
I think I will try the Fitness Extreme at Luton.
Lance, what about you? Do you try influence the girls here?
Not at all! I only turn up and do the odd one of these. I mainly run or just lift weights. I think for me doing the odd one or two is good for me just to test myself. I do not have influence on these two. And besides, Trudi wouldn't’t listen to me anyway!
Is there ever a family training session? Do you all train together?
Me and Lance train together on a Sunday. We go out running. Sam and I use the circuit classes and do a couple of body pump sessions a week – that’s about it. And then she trains on her own in the gym and sometimes with me when I go through the X Train courses.
Sam, you a very exiting prospect in this sport. The future lies ahead and I know Lance is quite keen for you to get involved in Triathlon – but from a personal point of view I think the chance for you to excel at this is very strong, particularly as you are such a young age. How do you see the future in X Training?
To be like Trudi. (awwwwww!!)
You do have a great role model there
Yeah, I do. I love to win some open competitions. That would be nice.
When do you think you might move on up to the open. I know it is early days. What do you think – a couple of year’s maybe?
Yeah, I think so, maybe when I am in my twenties
(Trudi) I actually think she can move up to it sooner then that. The Intermediate in the Ironman is like an Open event
(Lance) I think it’s a case of just getting a bit stronger
(Trudi) As long as she doesn't’t get bored of it and stays committed to her training she will do really well.
(Lance) She didn't’t perform at her best today either. She was slightly under the weather earlier in the week.
Sam , Trudi, Lance thanks for your time and obviously I want all the best for all of you in any event, but particularly Sam, who really is very inspiring and I think almost a role model to the young people who need to channel their energies into something more constructive when they are at the gym. And watching Sam today and the time she performed at – certainly for me means two things – friends, family and training partners help – but dedication to training at the end of the day wins races. And that was a brilliant performance – well done.
