Introduction By WGC

Kirk with his flamboyant lycra, six pack bulging, lean athletic physique along with his trade mark sleek black sunglasses, has been the man who simply brings the X factor into X Training.

He is the complete package; an established Personal Trainer with professional sport clients. He has a wealth of knowledge and experience that he teaches to those who are fortunate to be on his client base and to top it all he is the all round nice guy.

A proven boxing career of over 20 years will tell you that he is no stranger to pain and if anything is certain about Kirk when you see him in competitions, it is that you know you will see a true 100% performance.

On X-Training...

How long have you been doing X Training.

About 8 years

.      Kirk

What excites you about the sport?

It’s very challenging and always throws up something new.

Do you teach X Training to your clients?

No – they’re professional sports people, so the training I give them is sport-specific.

What are their views on Cross Training?

N/A.

On Sport...

Did you excel at sport at school and if yes, what sport?

Yes - athletics, football, rugby and basketball.

How often do you train?

Six days a week.

Do you compete in any other sport?

No.

Have you competed in any other sport in the past?

Yes - I competed in boxing for 20 years.

Kirk

Why do you find X Training so exciting?

The challenge.

Who has been your biggest influence in X Training?

Darren Robson.

What is your favourite exercise?

Teaching Body Combat.

What is your favourite food for training?

I like bagels, because I feel as though I have more energy throughout my aerobic sessions having eaten my bagels with peanut butter.  The bagels, unlike simple carbs (i.e. chocolate, sweets, even very ripe bananas) are what you call complex carbs and they are low GI. Therefore, they release energy slowly, giving you (hopefully) sustained energy for longer.

What is your ambition in X Training?

To beat Hywell Davies.

What exercise secret would you give a newcomer to cross training?

There are no secrets to exercises - just do them, and do them to the best of your ability!

On Sport...

Would you ever compete in another sport?

Yes I would. The sport I would compete in would be Superbike racing.  Training and
watching one of my clients race gets me going and I wish I could be out
there!

How often do you rest?

I rest when my body tells me it needs a rest, usually on a Sunday (unless I’m feeling energetic!)

Do you suffer from many injuries?

Which Sportsman/Sportswoman doesn't’t suffer from injuries!  You keep going and just give it your best shot.  I don’t remember anytime in the last 10 years where I haven’t had an injury.  That’s why I’v got a good Osteopath/Physio – Melvyn Johnson.

Have you ever parachuted (sky dived tandem or solo) out of a plane. Would you?

Me, jump out of a plane!!  Only if it was about to blow up!

What is the one sport you have never taken part in but would love to have excelled in?

Swimming.  Though I can swim I would have loved to be the one who showed that it is or was a myth that black people don’t make good swimmers.

Did you ever see the footie match in the film Kes?

I’ve never even heard of the film Kes!

On Entertainment...

What is your favourite comedy film?

The Nutty Professor.

What is your favourite action / drama film?

First Blood.

If you could meet anyone in sport, past or present, who would it be?

Jesse Owen.

If you could invite 3 people to dinner from all of history, who would they be?

Jesse Owen, Martin Luther King and Henry Rono (the great Kenyan long distance runner).

Who is your comedy hero?

Eddie Murphy.

What is your favourite book or magazine? Ultra Fit Magazine.

On Music...

What was the last CD you bought?

Club Sessions 18, as I tend to buy music to teach my classes to.  The music has to be uplifting.

What radio station do you listen to?

I tend not to unless a football match is on then I listen to Radio Derby. Come on you RAMS!

Who is your favourite radio DJ?

I haven’t really got one.

What is your fave album of all time?

UB40’s Greatest Hits 1980-2000.

On Film...

Who is the coolest film Actor?

Steve McQueen (Remember the Great Escape? – I’m giving my age away now!)

Who is the biggest villain?

Dr No (I love my Bond movies).

What is your favourite sports film?

Escape to Victory!  Remember the footie match in that, never mind Kes!!

On TV...

What is your fave TV show?

Any quiz show like “Who Wants to be a Millionaire”, “Weakest Link”.  I enjoy trying to answer the questions.

Do you watch soaps?

Yes, Eastenders and Coronation Street.

Are you a “biggest baddest TV with the flattest screen and Dolby surround sound is the best” kinda person?

No, a TV is a TV at the end of the day.  My 38” is good enough.

What sport shows do you watch?

What sport shows don’t I watch would be easier to answer!

Do you like UFC (Ultimate Fighting)?

Oh yeah, but give me boxing any day!

On Health...

Do you think the obesity problem in schools and the US can be controlled?

Start by educating parents then maybe.  I mean kids eat what is put in front of them.  An unhealthy parent will usually have an unhealthy child and vice versa.

What’s the one golden rule in weight management?

Eat / drink everything in moderation.

Do you know your BMI, BMR?

Yes, I do know my BMR (3346) but I think the BMI is a bit detrimental.  I have never thought it to be a good system.

Do you know your resting and maximum heart rate?

Resting heart rate is 39bpm but don’t know my maximum.

Do you train with an hr monitor?

When I’m training seriously, yes.
