Doug Harrison has spent most of this year training for events. That's a lot of training, but for somebody who is hugely competitive, training for events is what comes naturally to Doug.

A great ambassador for the sport of Gym X Training ,we asked him about taking part in FitBrit 2014 and coming 3rd and how it differs from what his normal training .

This unique and brief insite to differing techniques into training is certainly a eye opener into what and how some people train and their focus to remain commited in the search of pushing their body to the absolute maximum.

What are the simularities between your training and training for FitBrit?

Training is quite similar to X-Training: lactate threshold and tolerance training with high intensity circuits, rowing, cycling and running. However there were some new resistance stations not on the X-Training circuit that were a nice change.

The row was at level 10 though and I normally row on 6 so that was a killer in the legs and increases the strength endurance component on the legs and back.

The bike was a Life Fitness model with emphasis on cadence whereas X-Training use the Watt Bike, which has a gearing system much like a real bike. The run was a flat sprint but X-Training is normally on an incline of between 5-10%.

What was the main difference?

The main difference though is the resistance stations in X-Training are of a higher power output (reps x weight) and this takes a lot of specific training to master whereas the resistance station in FitBrit are much easier, less weight and less reps. This is probably intentional as it becomes a more accessible event to the general gym user.

Did you try and get more people you know involved in taking part ?

I have been trying to spread the word on social media, but reaction is quite muted. Even Mens Fitness haven't really tweeted about it on their main page

Will you compete next year?

I am hoping to compete again - i just need to get used to those Life Fitness bikes with the high cadence and I think I can be more competitive.

What did you think about the judging and set up ?

The stations in principle were good but the technique was not invigilated as well as in X-Training events and this can be frustrating at times. I was completing the VipR tilt reps like they had shown on their website but they made me change it to a weird technique I had never done before mid-way through my reps. Not ideal.
