Introduction by WGC

An exciting prospect is emerging into X Training of late - Catherine Garner. The emergence of new talent into this very tough sport is always welcome and with Catherine comes the welcome talent of somebody who fires on all cylinders when she competes and gives a true X training 100% performance.

The recent Fitness Extreme saw close rivals Sarah Deed and Catherine race in one of the closest races ever seen at a cross training event - and for those that were there - well , we witnessed what was probably the race of the season, it was that close!

I sincerely hope that Catherine stays with the sport because with her links with Edinburgh University, her degree in Sports science and her close friendship with Alex Woods and James King, X Training will definitely see growth and development in Scotland.

Catherine is well on course to be a top ten finisher with the Best of the Best.

Acheivements...

Current Scottish Champion 50-metres freestyle (swimming)

Qualifications...

BSc Applied Sport Science

On X-Training...

How long have you been X-Training?
8 months

Why do you find X-Training so exciting?
It's exciting because one competitor's weakness is another one's strength, and vice versa. That can make races pretty exciting to watch. I also think it's great for encouraging people to be generally fit.

Do you teach X-Training to your clients?
I probably would. Unless I saw them as a threat. Only kidding.

Who has been your biggest influence in X-Training?
Alex Woods and James King. They were on my Sport Science course at uni, and encouraged me to get involved. I also think it's great watching the likes of Jason King and Nick Kandola in action. The standard of the mens competition is so high, it's really good to watch.

How often do you train?
It varies from week to week. I like the fact that I am in charge of my own training programme now (unlike when I was swimming). I still swim at least 5 times a week (more for relaxation, and to prevent me from getting stiff), plus CV sessions, strength and muscular endurance sessions too.

What is your favourite excerise?
Maybe bench press because I've improved a lot at it over the past 6 months. My least favourite is definitely shoulder press. I only started doing that exercise when I began doing X-Training competitions.

What is your favourite food for training?
Well...I used to think that if I ate fish the night before a swimming competition, that it would make me swim well the next day. I don't really have a particular favourite food for training. I really hate bananas though, which is bad for an athlete.

What is your ambition in X-Training?
To win a race.

What exercise secret would you give a newcomer to X-Training?
I usually like to build into the run. It feels so much easier mentally to do it that way. Although in competitions, I haven't always stuck to that rule.

On Sport...

Did you excel at sport at school and if yes, what sport?
No...absolutely not. In fact I was pretty rubbish at sport at school. The only thing I could do was swim.

Do you compete in any other sport?
Yes, swimming. Although I decided to stop doing it seriously when I graduated from uni last summer.

Have you competed in any other sport in the past?
I used to do gymnastics when I was pretty young, but gave it up for my swimming.

How often do you rest?
When I feel I need to. I always have one day off a week.

Do you suffer many injuries?
No (touch wood). Sometimes I get sore shins from running, but I've never had a really serious injury.

Have you ever parachuted (sky dived tandem or solo) out of a plane. Would you?
Absolutely not. I can't think of anything I'd like to do less.

What is the one sport you have never taken part in but would have loved to have excelled in?
Some field event in athletics, like long jump or something. An event that involves a lot of natural talent and not a huge volume of training... which is also widely recognised and well funded.

If you could meet anyone in sport, past or present, who would it be?
The russian swimmer, Alex Popov.

Did you ever see the footie match in the film Kes?
No.

On Entertainment...

What is your favourite film?
Amelie

What is your favourite action/drama film?
Dirty Dancing

If you could invite 3 people to dinner from all of history, who would they be?
George Clooney, Bruno Tonioli (judge from Strictly Come Dancing), and my boyfriend Kris.

What is your favourite book or magazine?
A book called 'The Miracle of Castel di Sangro', a true story about an Italian football team.

On Music...

What was the last CD you bought?
Take That's Greatest Hits.

What radio station do you listen to?
Forth1, Radio1, Galaxy fm, Kiss fm.

Who is your favourite radio DJ?
Don't have a particular favourite

What is your fave album of all time?
erm...Take That's Greatest Hits?

Catherine at Fitness Extreme 2008

On TV...

What is your fave TV show?
Strictly Come Dancing

Do you watch soaps?
Nope, not really. I used to watch Neighbours when I was at uni, but I find soap-watching to be a big commitment, cos they're on so often.

Are you a 'biggest baddest TV with the flattest screen Dolby surround sound is the best' kinda person?
Not really. I'd rather buy some new clothes and have a rubbish TV.

What sport shows do you watch?
I like watching swimming and athletics if they're ever on TV. My boyfriend Kris swims for Great Britain, so I've watched his races on TV a few times. That can be pretty nerve-wracking. I also sometimes watch Transworld Sport. It's a bit different. I used to like Football Italia when it was on Channel 4.

Was this race of the season?

On Health...

Do you think the obesity problem in schools and the US can be controlled?
Yes. If parents are educated, and there are stricter controls placed on childrens eating habits whilst they are at school. I also think that by encouraging childrens games in the playground, it would help prevent childhood obesity

What's the one golden rule in weight management?
Balance is the key thing. A balanced lifestyle in terms of diet and exercise will prevent people from becoming obese.

Do you know your BMI & BMR?
No.

Do you know your resting and maximum heart rate?
Resting HR is 42, Max HR is 210

Do you train with an HR monitor?
No.
