Introduction by WGC

Few gymathletes are so widely respected as Gary Nicholls and Steve Watts. Why? They are simply truly inspiring people. Reaching their fifties and competing with the Gym elite at Open level, these guys are truly the Best of the Best in the UK for X Training. WGC takes a closer look at one of these guys, Gary Nicholls and asked a few questions as to what makes him tick.

Without doubt one of the nicest guys on the circuit and a true inspiration to hundreds of X Trainers who know what Gary delivers each time he enters an event.

Gary believers 100% at every event he enters - including this one , the Indoor Ironman

The above may be to some just a few numbers - but to those that know how tough this event is - Impressive is the word that springs to mind - just one question to the gym he trains at - are they bothered?

One of the best X Trainers in the country Gary Nicholls.

How long have you been doing X Training

I have been crosstraining for the last 9 years (I was a late starter).

The gruelling weight carry at The Indoor Ironman
 Gorton Grueller 2007
What was your most memorable race

Most memorable race this year was Calso 2008 against Stevie Watts and if I hadn't hit the bloody stop button on the treadmill by mistake, Who Knows!!

How many people from your gym X Train

At the moment only 3/4 people train for cross training at my gym.  I try to get others involved but when they see the training I do for the competitions they cry off!!

 Multi skilled and determined
What would you like to see happen to the sport

I would like the sport to be accepted more within the fitness centres around the country so encouraging more competitors of all ages (namely us old farts)

What was was the last CD you brought

The last CD bought was Amy Winehouse, Back to Black

Dragons Gauntlet 2006

What is your favourite film

Favourite film is Full Metal Jacket

Do you eat healthily

I do eat healthily, but still cannot give up the bacon and egg butties!!

How often do you train

I train five nights a week, weekends off (I need a rest)

Who is your biggest rival

My biggest rival I would say is Stevie Watts.  Now that he is in Vets category I look forward to some interesting times because in the past his times have been faster than mine in some areas, namely bike and run. I hope now to improve on these areas having taken up spinning classes.

  What is favourite venue
Favourite venue would be Fitness First Luton.  Very well planned and organised due to having more space to put on a good competition with spectators having access all round the course to cheer on and support the competitors.
How do  you feel about being the eldest Competitor – and one that has times equal to guys twenty years younger then you?
My age has never bothered me, but after the races and upon checking my times I get a good sense of achievement to see that I am always in the top half of the Men's Open Category, and I hope to keep improving with age! (like a vintage wine)
Who would win in a race between Seb Coe and yourself?
It looks as if Seb Coe has put a bit of weight on over the years, so if it was over 100 metres I would like to think it would be a very close race with me just nailing him on the line.
 Dragons Gauntlet

Thanks to Gary - one of the most inspirational gymathletes I know.

When I say he is admired by those around him, it is probably a understatement. Gary is simply one of the very best of the best and if he was a member of my gym I would be privileged to have him train there.
