Fitness Extreme at Fitness First Luton - X Training Challenge 2008

Introduction by WGC

Fitness Extreme is one event held at Fitness First, Luton each year by the organiser Mark Drury. It's normally sold out weeks in advance by X Trainers who know that by entering these event they are rising to the challenge of entering at the Open Level - is one of the hardest gym challenges in the world. For this event to happen, two ingredients are needed - a dedicated professional to set up the event and a supporting Operations Manager - here Ben gives his view on the day.

Also - a day to remember is not only for the winners but also those who traveled and took part - a few comments from Karen Kandola and David Lightower on how they saw the day.

As the manager of FF Luton what do you think of the day?

It’s been a fantastic day. I’ve arrived for work today and it looks like everybody is enjoying themselves.

A judge turned competitor from Esporta Southampton.
 Gary Dorman
Dave Coard ensuring the right technique and reps are counted.
Having not seen a X Training event before – would you like to see it done on a more regular basis

Definitely. I think it should be done on a more regular basis. Maybe quarterly or something like that. A lot of members will reach their goals.

Life Fitness Treadmills stood up to the test on the day
Ensuring that every step of the way is recorded and fair .
Staff at Fitness First are notorious for getting the judging right. A job well done
Mark Drury organised this event. What are views form that perspective ?

He’s done fantastic. He’s advertised it well in the club and worked very hard all over. When I came into the club today, the whole event had been set up and was in full flow. Mark was well on top of it every step of the way.

I am trying to get an on line event going called Gymxtc – where members won’t have to travel to venues such as this and can do it in their own gym. What are your thoughts on that?

Good idea. Good for a member to do it in their own gym.
Fitness First crew all help out on the day.
What about you – Are you a sporty person.

I am, but ironically working in gyms all my life I don’t really get much chance to work out. I was a swimmer and did a lot of X Country when I was younger. I love all types of sports especially  – badminton, volleyball and basketball.

.
 Best of friends compete together

How long have you worked for fitness first?

Roughly three months now. Before this I was with Virgin Active for five years. I have worked in front of house , sales and operations.

.

Have you seen much change in the Industry?

It’s highly competitive now. It’s changed dramatically. Back in the day when I first started out it was quite easy to get members to join, but now you have to sell a lot of member benefits to  get members to join

.

And finally – what sort of advantage has fitness first got over any other club?

That’s easy , value for money. We are the cheapest out there for the service we provide and we provide everything we can for our members. We have great packages for members to meet their goals and we see great results. Fitness First is a fantastic product .

Being Married to one of the top X Trainers in the country - Nik , would it be fair to say some of his influence has rubbed off on you and the way you train?
Yes very much so! I have been X Training for about 9 - 10 months and really enjoy it. There are a group of us who train together at David Lloyd in Basildon and we  really enjoy the social side of competing as well as training together.
Nik and future X Training Training Champion?
 How often do you train?
About three to four times a week. We meet up on a Saturday and take it it turns to train and look after the kids at the creche. Our group at DL that train really are focused and we are always training for upcoming events. The last one I took part in was Calso in Beckenham and I hope to take part more this year.
Who do you most admire in the sporting world?
Paula Radcliffe.
What do you think about X Training as a whole?
It's a bit of the short sharp shock treatment. It's not for everybody. It takes a lot to perform in front of a crowd. But once you have been bitten by the personal challenge you have set yourself, you find yourself much more motivated and see real results and achieve so much more then if you just turned up at a gym without any goals or motivation.
Karen on the last event - the Bench Press.

 David lightower
How did you hear about this event?
I used to train at Dimensions which is across the street and entered for the first time two years ago. I look out for this event as it's local to me. Having said that I traveled to Hampshire and Calso and really enjoyed them both.
 What results did you get?
I won the Male masters at Hampshire and was 4th overall at Calso. I was really pleased with my performances.
What Gym do you train at now and are there are other X Trainers there?
I train at Cannons in St Albans and no there are no other X Trainers there. I think it's too hard for them!
If you don't mind me asking - how old are you?
I am 47 years old.
Your race between lloyd Millichap was outstanding. Lloyd had quite a few years on you and there was overall very little difference in the race.  I'd just like to say well done for a truly inspiring performance.
To be a good X Trainer you need to have many skills not just one ....
 Amazing upper body strength ....
 Good cardio ....
The ability to fight through pain ....
 A multitude of skills ...
Ability to use all the equipment in the gym to the best of your capabilities.  And the need to focus on finishing.

In every gym you will find them - they are the Gym Elite and they X Train.
