The Gym Ironman/Ironwoman
Comment by Stuart Leng
Normal service is resumed in the 2009 X-Training calendar, with the Ironman being the first event of the year.
The forthcoming event has a little difference about it next year, whereby the exact order of the 10 disciplines will not be known by the competitors until 2 days before the event. This Pick n Mix approach was used once before when the event was held at One on One in Worcester in 2002 when 12 disciplines were used including two 1000 metre runs. It was very challenging and proved very popular.
The Ironman competitors are a hardy bunch who will take on any challenge that is thrown at them and after an initial "you must be bonkers " chorus, everyone is really excited by the challenge, so much so, that they have requested a team event as well!!
Whilst it would be ideal to have the event in or near Worcester, that hasn't been possible as yet and the Fitness First team in Gorton has once again welcomed the event with open arms.
The event will revert back to it's original format next year.
It seems at this stage that there will be an excellent turnout and the Royal Marines are once again relishing the challenge.
The team event will also be solely organised for the benefit of the Help the Heroes charity and to add further support to the wonderful efforts by one of it's best known competitors, Danny Watson to raise crucial funds for a very special cause.
The WGC has always been highly supportive of the Ironman and as a result, organiser Stuart Leng is happy to have the WGC prefix against the event in recognition of that support.
Whist the event is regarded as extreme by some, it should be remembered that there is an Intermediate category and that the event attracted as many entrants as other major X-Training events.
X-Trainers don't want easy options, but a variety that will challenge them in their training throughout the year.
Details about the Team Event will be added shortly.
Good luck to all who take part.
Stuart
