WGC managed a quick interview with a very busy Ty Whitlock during The Hampshire event and got a brief insight to the man, his work and the event.

What do you think of the day so far and what differences have you noticed compared to previous years |
The turnout is really really good this year, as always - so this has made me really happy. I think with the level of competition has certainly gone up from last year to this year and the club had a good turn-out probably 26 or 27 in the club and they all done very very well, both in the sprint and intermediate - both ladies and males.
Without the Bench Jumps , do you think people have noticed much difference
I think the course this year albeit one exercise has dropped out has caught some people by surprise – I think some people have looked at it and thought well not too much different, bench jumps been taken out perhaps it should be a little bit quicker? but having a little look at the times to-date they are all comparative to last year . |
In the lead up to this with your internal people taking part, how did they sort of train towards this? Were you coaching them or did they have Ben on board or what happened there ? |
Well in the sprints Ben Williams, one of the personal trainers here, was taking all the club’s sprint male and females. He was training them and encouraging them and giving them the sort of experiences that he had earlier on this year and last year in this event . As far as the intermediate goes I have been doing a bit of work with Ben, a little bit of advice with Kelly and some of the ladies in the intermediate side personally trained them, so yea I think, I think its been a combination of Ben and myself. Ben is obviously in the gym a lot, so we all get round and encourage and assist when necessary . I think possibly I am not in the gym as much as I could be with work commitments, but the phone call is there, and yea I think it’s a bit of both helping really |
Just moving on to Help For Heroes – great cause and how did you get involved and give us a little bit of information about that |
W ell what I have done is as I have obviously been in the forces myself , it's quite close to my heart and now my eldest son is in the forces in the RAF regiment currently serving abroad in Afghanistan. He is here today because he has managed to get 12 days leave so I thought well with him being there and with the bit of back ground that I have got it's a great charity to support. And obviously now we have encouraged a lot of forces guys into the sport of X training I though it would be quite fitting really to finish the year off with the Help For Heroes. Obviously at the moment it is quite stressful for all the soldiers now that are serving in her Majesty’s forces and with a lot of the conflicts that are going on abroad obviously it is the least we can do .
Good points – next year? I mean lets get this one out of the way first but is there always gonna be a Hampshire?
Well with all fairness I think like with anything there does need to be people that need to step-up to the mark and probably take over and that is not me saying that it is going to finish next year, I think every year I think I say that perhaps someone else now and encourage other people to take it over. But I do enjoy it once it is finished and I suppose in a perverse way I enjoy the buzz that goes with setting it up but like with anything 15 odd years is a long long time now so perhaps other people need to step in
