The Brighton X Training Challenge 2009

This year see's the introduction of the Brighton X Training Challenge, a new event for the season. Organiser Jamie Spencer has worked closely with the management of Corals Health and Fitness Club and created a challenge that has seen one of the biggest turn out's this year for a XTE.

What is significant about this event is the emergence of the Gymathlete as a recognized competitor in a soon to be recognized sport - X Training.

WGC continues to put pressure on Sport England and local gyms to encourage the growth of this sport by offering free membership to gyms and members up and down the UK , to which many are looking into now. But at the end of the day , you cannot force gym managers to take part - that is down to the individual - and some the best individuals in the UK are mentioned below .

Chris Lord
Since his introduction to X Training from just a few years back, Lordy has made a huge impact on the scene. He is currentlly the man to beat with his winning form from last year. Lordy won Fittest Royal Marine and several other titles and has set many course records. A time Trial at Gillingham for the WGC Challenge - met he travelled several hundred miles to get his time verfied and he is one of the few Premier Gymathletes in the country.
Vitto Graffagnino
Not a lot is known about Vitto from WGC, only that an impressive time at Hampshire and a former Toughguy ™ winner means that any race that Vitto enters will be very entertaining as you don't win Toughguy™ without experiencing a shed load of pain .... a bit like X Training at the Open level.
Steve Dowse

A welcome return to the X Training scene brings Steve back into the Limelight.Steve has not competed for nearly two long years and marks his return in competing in the first Brighton XTE, which is a lot closer then the New York marathon that he recently competed in.Few personal trainers in the UK will have the ability to inspire and motivate, but you can rely on Steve to get you on track to whatever your goal may be. Really good to have Steve back in the sport again.

Definition Lifestyle and Fitness

Andy Lett
Andy Lett represents everything that is good about X Training. Quiet, confident and amazing Gymathlete - a top five finisher in Brit Fit last year and a history of finishing in X Training events in the top three , especially in the Masters category. Rochdale Fitness First has one of the best X Trainers in the country and he takes the long journey down from Manchester along with several others to compete in this event.
Becky Nicholas

In form Becky from Calso Gym in Kent , is one of the favourites to win this year - obviously a few others will try and stop her, but as a personal trainer and somebody who knows athing or two about X Training - whoever Becky races , you can be sure it will be a full on race and very exciting to watch

Penny B
Competing from another gym in manchester, Penny is steadily climbing up the ladder to compete amongst the current top female X Trainers and this is down to two things - the people she trains with and the dedication in which she trains at.
Amber Anderson

The very popular Amber Anderson competes regularly at nearly all of the XTE's and always at the Open Level. Much admiration from the community as Amber competes for the love of the sport and is becoming more and more accomplished after each event. Training out of David Lloyd in Basildon, Amber and husband Nelson represent the silent minority of the gym - those that have achieved great levels of fitness - yet are ignored by their own gym. But not by WGC.

Chris Raynor
Competing for a number of years at Open level Chris has achieved much. Maybe not so much in podium finishes - but with her commitment to the sport and was heavily involved in the popular Grand Prix when it ran a few years ago. Work commitment has kept Chris from competing of late , but good to see her at both Hampshire and Brighton and recently in the team event at the WGC Ironman.
Lloyd Millichap

Every Step of the Way. Lloyd Millichap is literally turning Camberley Fitness First in Surrey into one of the best X Training Clubs in the UK - Only Rochdale, Gorton and Luton have similar X Training events - but this year saw the introduction of Lloyds own event, where in particular mainly his clients only competed and that is a first. What Lloyd saw was a brilliant relationship develop between client and personal trainer and Lloyd was there for his clients Every Step of the Way .

Dominic Davies

Former rugby player Dominic was introduced to the sport by Lloyd - Dominic's recent quote of "I love it " when asked what he thought about X Training will see him compete in many events this year, you can be sure of that - and ask Lloyd if Dom is improving and he will be the first to say - watch out for Dom, he is very keen and improving by the second and a good discovery for the sport because I reckon when he hits the Open events , he will be as good as any in the sport right now.

Jamie is a member of Fitness First Camberley

Jamie Spencer

Organiser of this years event at Brighton passion for the sport of X Training is currently unrivalled this year - competing in all events including a trip to Iceland and now creating his own event at Corals Health and Fitness, just goes to show what can be achieved by anybody who wants to make the sport grow. There have been many great athletes in this sport - but their day has been and gone - the new X Trainer who competes in the new events is where the future lies and Jamie has set a new precedent in terms of challenges this year.

Dave Hall

Dave is a long time X Trainer and will compete in any X Training event if he can. It rubs off on his clients too - because as a single gym with a new following of X Trainers, Dave's Gym in Surrey has brought new life into the some of the regulars who now appear at each event.

Miles Micallef

Again from Daves Gym in Surrey and becomming a regualr at events , Miles is bringing the family connection to the sport when he competes at X Training, in fact genetics is so important to understanding physical fitness that the findings and results become even more interesting as each race goes by. As long as Miles keeps his training on par with his brother's, there will always be some incredible races at X Training.

Miles takes on for the first time the Open at this year's Challenge in Brighton and so will test himself even more as he tries what its like to compete with the Best of the Best in X Training.

Anton Micallef
Again from Dave's Gym in Surrey ,Anton is slower then his brother Joseph by just 2 seconds in the WGC Challenge . The race last year was awesome and incredibly exciting - Brother vs Brother, with genetics and similar training is a sports scientist dream - EFR (Equal Fitness Racing) the concept behind the world gym challenge just doesn't get better then this and it will be great to see how these guys do this year when they take on their first Open event.
Ty Whitlock

Ty the organiser of the Hampshire Christmas Cracker (usually the last race of the year) has decided to make a return to X Training Events. He last competed in XT at Calso where I raced him- being one of the fittest Fire Fighters in the UK meant he went on to a well earned win, but good fun. Good to see Ty back in the race order.

Ty is one of a small number of entrants from the Hampshire Health and Raquets Club which is part of the Esporta Chain

Simon Friel

Simon has continued nicely at each event - his jorney is still on the Intermediate level and shortly if he decides to, maybe a look at the Open will see this very popualr Gymathlete go on to another level of X Training.

X Training is not really about competing in Open events - but racing somebody of equal fitness, so that each race by its own right is incredibly exciting to watch (EFR) Equal Fitness Racing.

Kelly Friel
Kelly now takes the step forward in the Open event - dominating the Intermediate Female for the last season Kelly has put the effort in and is justifiably one of the most improved Gymathletes in the UK today. Influenced by husband Simon they both share an exciting passion for fitness and would be great to see these two race each other at Gymxtc ™ The Orbital this year as the Husband and Wife race.
