Winning last year in an amazing time was probably your best moment in x training ? What event would you like to win most

Winning at Luton last year and setting a course record was amazing especially since the line-up was very tough. I doubt there are too many people out there who can claim to have beaten the likes of Ben, Chris and Sam in one event. However things have moved on and I am sure Chris would beat me today, just as sure as he will probably beat my course record this year. Even if my record does go this year, no one can take away the win and the scalps from last year!!! With regards to what event I would most like to win - simple. ALL OF THEM. I do not enter to make up the numbers, I am there to win and I train to win. That being said the one title which has eluded me and Nik for the last 2 years is the team Octathalon and I really really really want that back!

X training is quite a hard sport and takes hours of dedication and training - after winning one of the best events of last year did your gym in any way reward you ? Or knowledge what you have achieved?

Not in the slightest. But then and again they probably didn't know I was competing and probably never found out the result as I did not tell them. I am not the sort of person who "bigs" myself up and brags about achievements etc. I trained hard, competed and won, and then the very next day just got back into training as if nothing ever happened. Recognition from the gym would be nice, but thats not why we all do the sport and train as hard as we do.

In the light of your current domestic and family ties - How do you see the present state of x training?

I try to stay clear of all the politics of the sport and to be honest I am getting a bit confused with all the acronyms and event rankings out there. I am a bit of a simpleton really and just want to train hard, compete harder and have fun all the time doing it. I like the fact that new people are stepping up to put on events in the calendar. Me and Nik have spokenNelson Anderson with Jason at the 2008 Time Trials about it and if it wasn't for family commitments I would love to try running a comp myself. I think the actual competition out there at the moment is fierce. There's a real good mix of new and old blood in the sport, both young and old, and in novice, intermedite and open which all bodes well for a future of great racing.

Do you still train with Nik, Nelson Amber etc ?

I like to train with Nik, Nels, Amber and Mikki when ever possible. However lately is seems very hard for us to all meet up at the same time. I like to try and get with them once a week if possible but it doesn't always happen. I think both myself and Nik are prioritising family as Nr.1 right now and cannot commit the same desire and devotion that Nels, Amber and Mikki put into X-training. The problem I have is that I train really hard 2-3 times a day on weeks days in order to be able to rest and spend the weekend with my boys. But then the weekend is the only chance I get to meet up with the DL gang and by this time I am usually wiped out from the week or don't want to train as I want some family time.

Can we Jase back in events when family life quietens down a bit?

I would like to think so. Just because I am not competing right now I am still training for all the events as normal and would be lying if I said I wasn't in pretty good shape. I have sneaked in a few sessions specific to Fitness Xtreme lately and keep getting the urge to just enter despite everything that I have going on. The question in the back of my mind though is what else can I achieve in the sport to motivate myself? I am not far from 40 and without being big headed I have won a few events, and had a fair few podiums and reached number 2 on the old UK rankings. Basically I have achieved far more than I ever expected I could within the sport. There are younger, stronger and fitter people coming along and with age against me I doubt I will improve much on where I peaked in early 2008. So maybe its time for me to move on and look for new challenges...........

What would you like to see happen for the sport ?

Not sure really. I guess it would be nice to see X-Training actually recognised as a sport and as such receive funding and support from Sport England/Lottery etc. This is what is needed to push things to the next level and enable international events to be held. As a bit of a techno geek I would also like to see some fancy whidgets or gadgets to assist in judging and enforcing strict reps.

How would you recommending training for fitness x and what tips can you give ?

My tops 10 tips:

1. Enjoy training and competing - if you don't then get out and do something else.

2. Never train over and above with the reps/distances. I find your body gets used to working at the slower rate and if anything I prefer to lower the weights/reps and get my body used to working faster.

3. Make sure you get a good mix of cardio, strength, interval and core sessions.

4. Keep a diary of all your training, noting heart rate, reps, weights, times, rest periods. For me this has paid divendends as I compare my preperation for an event from the previous year and can see where my form lies.

5. Try and find some good training partners to make sessions fun and to push yourself harder.

6. Make sure each week you get in at least one dedicated run session, one bike session and one row session.

7. Don't change your diet or start guzzling energy drinks on race day. For me this screws my system up. Just eat what your body is normally used too.

8. Train specifically for an event and set yourself a goal / program at least 6-8 weeks out.

9. Mix your training sessions up. X-training is so varied and you need to be a jack of all trades. Every session can be slightly different to help keep you motivated and excited.

10. Drink plenty to keep hydrated during your training sessions.

Chris Lord is dominating the sport - is this good for the sport or bit lke Hywel becoming one horse Race because no one else can beat him ? (Although Neil Cameron has a faster time last year)

The last time Chris and Jason met was at The Hampshire - an epic battle that had Chris winning the latest title.

It seems to me that every year or two a new "gem" turns up on the scene who is a true elite athlete and cleans up at all events for some time. Originally this was Hywell, more recently we have seen the reign of Sam and now Chris. But it seems all these "gems" soon move on to find other challenges - perhaps we should be asking why this is? Maybe it is not good for one person to dominate so clearly.

Describe your average work out ?

Hard to describe an average workout as every session is different. Some days I will focus on just running, rowing or bike. The next day I might do an hour of HST weights and then maybe a hurtbox session. Basically I try and make sure I get in 3 strength session a week, 3 cardio, 2 interval, 2 karate and then make sure I do some abs and core every day.

Last year Jason went on to win at Luton , it was probably one of the best line ups in recent years and Jason was a clear cut winner.

Anything else you want to add?

Good luck to all at Luton - wish I could be there
