Dear WGC Member,

Welcome to June’s Newsletter

The news keeps coming about the fittest gym members in the UK. Loads of photos and news on events – all the ingredients needed to push the news about the only sport for gyms – X Training.

What's been happening and what's going to happen?

  • The news on the horizon is of the very and established Gorton Grueller is approaching fast. The legendary event where the number 60 shoulder press in the Open takes the gym user to a new experience – is like nothing you would have gone through in training – but then you are the Gym Elite and relish the chance to enter the toughest gym challenges in the world.

  • Mark Drury pushing the new course at Fitness X with entrants from the Royal Marines PTI’s , Army PTI’s , Personal Trainers and Gym members from all over the UK.

  • Chris Lord, UK’s No 1 X Trainer – set another course record

The UK GCA wanted to get a feel for the experience to some 'newbies' into the Sport and here is a quick fire reaction to some question about competing at Luton X Training Challenge.

The Gorton Grueller 2009

The Gorton Grueller is on the horizon and the lead up to that right now means the UK Gym Elite and deep in training. Unfortunately the UK GCA was not invited to this event last year, but with a new Organiser Mike Jones and the Fitness Committee at Gorton wanting the UK GCA there to report on events and publish there results - we leapt at the chance to report on probably one of the toughest physical challenges on this planet...

On May 16th at Fitness First, Luton, Mark Drury a personal trainer there created and ran Fitness X, a X Training Challenge aimed at the seriously fit and the seriously motivated. What makes this event so unique (as with all X Training UK GCA events) is that competitors are not just from one gym - they compete against the best from several gyms, including the armed services. The supreme effort to compete meant that competitors arrived from as far as Aberdeen to compete. Have a read and see if you could compete in the next X Training Challenge....

The Gym X Training Championships was an initiative taken on board by the UK GCA to raise the profile of both Gym Athlete and Gym in the X Training world. Richard Vint (Runner Up) Fit Brit 2008The Gym Athletes Championship

Running alongside the Gym Championships is the Individual Board. It's a game of Kings Queens and Pawns here. The points all tally up by the individuals who take part and that may mean for some - they are individually shining and others are bringing in the points for their gym. This is the only sport in the UK where member and personal trainer only earn fitness points for their gyms. Lets have a look at the leaders so far....

For Goodness Shakes!

“ For Goodness Shakes! works hard to support all sporting abilities, from beginner to elite. The aspirational sport of World Gym Challenge gives offers that rare opportunity for novices to race alongside the seasoned hardcore athletes and witness firsthand what it feels like to push yourself to the limit. And this is where For Goodness Shakes! comes in. Providing the ideal mix of protein, carbs and electrolytes, to energise, feed, rebuild and hydrate after sport. Training is wasted without recovery and it’s the commitment to putting in the hours beforehand, followed by the all out exhaustion of an event that we are proud to support”.

Summary

The sport of X Training is going through a transition of sorts - technology means that events can be set up and recorded at venues all over the UK (indeed the world) and all that needs to happen is somebody from a gym set it up - lets remember this is a Gym Challenge in a gym, using predominately the equipment and training techniques that you would normally do in a gym. The UK is leading the way in promoting this amazing sport which gets results - measures your fitness and keeps you motivated at every visit to the gym.

The increase in events is a very positive move by all the organisers - numbers that enter events have fallen slightly - but that is a good thing in balance - far easier to manage - co ordinate and less work for any gym to get bogged down in upsetting other members from their own gym. If the events continue to rise then the sport will grow due to its geographical advantage of over 4700 gyms in the UK with the infrastructure of personal trainers and members to compete. It's a fantastic time for the sport , with some incredible Gym Athletes emerging and WGC is very proud to lead the search for the Ultimate Gym Athlete at The Orbital on the 27th September at a new location for the sport Fitness First Chatham.

The UK GCA would like to thank For Goodness Shakes for their support and supply to the UK Gym Elite for having in our opinion the best tasting shake on the market.
